Marvel Comics Wolverine Origin

I want to get into comics, where do I start – what are the classics should read before getting into new things?

I'm not sure if I want start – DC or Marvel. What are the differences? I heard that one is more traditional than the other, care to elaborate? Also, if I were to choose one of the two – where should I start? What are the classics read to get a good basis on what I want to go? For example, I would not want to go straight to New / issues Latest X-Men when I do not know any of the characters / what is happening. What I have to read to get started? Feel free to complain and suggest favorite for me … the only comic book I have is the Wolverine Origins and loved it and would continue. Also, what about Watchmen? = D Thanks!
