Ipad like Apple, but it is essential?

Apple announced it sold 300 000 iPads the first day it was available, so the device is a good start. But as I said before, I think we need to see how people are actually using the Ipad after I had it for a couple of months before we know whether this is really a game-changer or just a fun gadget.

My Ipad arrived at midmorning Saturday, and despite the nice weekend, I was able to spend time with him. So far, I found some irritations, but in general, my experiences have been quite positive.

As usual, with most of devices from Apple, IPAD just looks great. After I got set up, I immediately found myself fighting my family during the time in the device. The metal box and tapered sides make it appear thinner and lighter than it really is. The brushed aluminum case felt a little slippery, but overall the IPAD treated well. 1.5 pounds is noticeably heavier than a newspaper, magazine, or Kindle, but I do not think it will be a real barrier for people to use it.

Setup was simple. Ipad works with iTunes as an iPod or iPhone, and you select the applications, music, videos and photos you want to download on iTunes. However, to get your Ipad to work, you must download and install iTunes 9.1, and for some reason, this version took about 40 minutes to process my iTunes library.

So far I have mostly used the machine to test some of the media applications. I found much to be desired in relation to applications for the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, Marvel Comics, ABC and others. In general, I've been very impressed by the creativity theses applications have shown, and hope we'll see more in the future. (See my review here.) I'm still not convinced that many people will pay for these applications, even if the content is available free on Web sites, but there is something to be said about the fact that you can now have the information with you offline.

I found the very general Ipad easy to read. In normal lighting conditions at home and abroad shadow, which looked very good. Like most LCD screens, which does not work in sunlight, and I found the glare on the screen a bit annoying when trying to read the newspaper on the train applications. So far I'm generally happy with the LCD display, although I have not really tried reading books for any length of time yet. (A book I wanted to read this week is not out electronically.)

I have tried both Exchange Web and e-mail device, and the new interface to the mail client is quite interesting. When you hold the screen horizontally, you'll see a list of messages left side and the message really (with HTML formatting) on the right. When you hold it vertically, you will see a message at a time, but you can hit a button to see a scrolling list of all messages, or a list of all your folders.

My Yahoo email account seemed to work very well offline, but the Exchange e-mail really needed a connection (as does the iPhone). I like the way IPAD indexes e-mails and contacts with the files from the main search screen. In general, I was very happy with the iPhone's mail client. I think it makes more than the email client on the Droid Motorola, for example, although customers Email Mac and Windows has many features.

The Web browser Safari works the same way as it does in Ipad the iPhone, with all the pros and cons of same, except, of course, you can see much more of the page in larger screen. And it make a huge difference. A laptop usually at least as large a screen as an IPAD, of course, and support the Flash and Silverlight – and this is a great thing, at least now.

For example, in the mail this weekend, I had several messages with links to videos of YouTube and sites with music, they simply will not work in IPAD. (One was a link to the OK Go "This Too Shall Pass" video Rube Goldberg-type, which has more than 10 million views, but clicking on it in just Ipad you receive a "could not load video" box. You can find a similar version using the YouTube application, but is not the same).

The IPAD not have nearly the battery life of an e-reader, in part due to LCD. But it was not bad. I have about eight hours before I saw the Battery "Low" message, which is slightly smaller than Apple claims that worse and noted that many of the reviews first. My guess is that a Wi-Fi signal attracts weaker battery power strong.

Sitting on a sofa with IPAD for web browsing and email was a pleasant experience. The machine is relatively light and seems angry. But I lost the features I have on my laptop? Absolutely.

The lack of a physical keyboard is obvious. The onscreen keyboard is not bad, it's perfectly normal to answer e-mail, but I would not want that kind of review on the screen. Tim Gideon of PC Magazine wrote his review this way, but not for me. If we were all using the keyboard on the screen only, a physical keyboard would seem a huge advance.

Multitasking is another obvious question. You can play iTunes music while running other applications, but not Pandora or Rhapsody.

Moreover, it is very easy to pick up the IPAD and just use it without thinking of starting up (assuming it is charged) and I am not really taking care of the missing keyboard, multitasking, Flash or anything that often. I'll have to give this a try for a little more and see how many times I just come from the IPAD and how many times I'm going back to my laptop.

I've used other pills before and IPAD clearly offers a better consumer experience than the that has gone before. But I think the jury is still out how to know if it will cease to be a fun gadget for early adopters of a very useful addition to the technology that most people use.
