Thanks to increased interest in comics and graphic novels, because of movies like The Dark Knight, Iron Man The Incredible Hulk and adapting next year's WATCHMEN movie, many people are turning to the page pointed to in search of the perfect Christmas present for 2008. Start in graphic novels can be extremely scary because of the large number of titles available, so here is a run-down of ten of the greatest graphic novels of all time. This is the title that fans new and old should have in their collections. These are among the best examples of the genre and the comics industry as a whole. They are presented here for your enjoyment in no particular order.

WATCHMEN

Widely acknowledged as the greatest graphic novel of all time, and certainly the best-selling book to hit shelves of comics. Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons created something so monumental that it was a best seller for nearly two decades, not to mention spawning the most anticipated film of 2009.

V FOR VENDETTA

Alan Moore and David Lloyd's original graphic novel that inspired the movie ht. A moving and emotional masterpiece that is considered one of the landmarks of the genre.

MARVELS

The beautifully painted art by Alex Ross was the perfect accompaniment perfect script for Kurt Busiek this magnificent book. A unique and almost perfect exploitation of years of the Marvel Universe.

Kingdom Come

Alex Ross also provided the artwork for the alternate history amazing DC future. Complex and fascinating, Kingdom Come, written by Mark Waid, Ross cemented as one of the true stars of the comics medium.

CIVIL WAR

The biggest rock event in the Marvel Universe in recent years. Hero faced the hero as the debate about the act of registering superheroes spilled into violence. A truly monumental thriller, which saw the writer Mark Millar take the main characters from Marvel to a new level of drama.

THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS

Frank Miller turned the comics industry, and specifically the character of Batman, this seminal graphic novel. Batman has been retired for ten years, and Bruce Wayne, once again assume the mantle of the Bat, to assume a new generation of villains.

BAD

This is a unique memoir by Art Spiegelman, presented as a graphic novel, that thirteen years to complete. It chronicles the struggle of Spiegelman's father to survive the Holocaust as a Polish Jew in a story told in black and stark white with stylized cats and rats.

PREACHER

The nine volume series PREACHER Vertigo DC is one of his more contemporary comics. Wriiten by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon art with beautiful covers of Glen Fabry, is a poignant and moving tale of redemption, religion and Hicks vampire.

Y, the last man

The fascinatng, epic in several parts following the adventures of Yorick, the last man on earth, and his monkey. The moving deep analysis of a future very even black.

The Killing Joke

Currently, the most sought after title Batman published. This impressive one-shot from some of the source material for the mega hit movie The Dark Knight, and presents a typically sparkling screenplay by Alan Moore and elegant art of Brian Bolland 2000AD star.

These are just some of the draft trade innovative graphic novels that have thrilled fans of comics in the world, and consolidated the comics industry as a force to be reckoned with. The impact of these works is enormous, and has seen the move from being a niche genre of interest to a phenomenon of entertainment and literature in recent years.
