Is there a way to cram a life's worth of comic book fan for a knowledge of Marvel and DC in a few weeks?

I'm a fan of comic book characters being made into movies like Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, etc., but I hate that I do not know enough about the legend to really enjoy the film – there is therefore a book or encyclopedia which is like a condensed compendium of all the Marvel and DC Comics has created? Or an animated series? Or five .. **** ALSO! Do u guys belong some kind of site that tells you ahead of time that new movies are coming out of comics?

One way is to visit the site publishers. DC Comics has mini comics online about the origins of superheroes and History of the DC Universe. http://www.dccomics.com/dcu/heroes_and_villains/ Marvel Comics has something a bit similar that I find it more confusing at times. But they give summary descriptions of characters, or teams, or events (like the Civil War). There is also http://marvel.com/universe/Main_Page books available that you can buy or read your local bookstore. http://www.amazon.com/Marvel-Encyclopedia-Tom-DeFalco/dp/0756655307/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266076157&sr=8-1 Encyclopedia Marvel DC Encyclopedia http://www.amazon.com/DC-Comics-Encyclopedia-Updated-Expanded/dp/0756641195/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b EDIT: Here are some sites that I I read to see what's happening with movies comics. http://www.superherohype.com/ http://www.comicbookmovie.com/ http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=author&id=136
