Magneto's powers allow him to not only control the use of metal, but the magnetic field to protect or cities (handle it). It can also create force fields and he can use atoms around him. For example, it can cause storms and power control and use things in the atmosphere, we can not even see. As he turned off torches of fire cage without moving at all. He may also, at full power, control objects not metal. He can also take the iron from the soil and even control and deflect the laser. It also poses mental powers and is immune to them too. He is known as the most powerful mutant in the world. Ps: Magneto can also take the iron off the flow of blood and make people suffer heart attacks or fainting or control their minds. He also lifted entire islands and moved mountains. He can create wormholes and can become invisible. In the Phoenix Magneto kills comics, giving him a heart attack.
As Professor X would clear the mind of his powers, but this is only quick fix. He would wear off, but the shell and X-Men would find a way to arrest him as they did in the Ultimate universe
