How to Save Your Sanity: Cats and Furniture
New cats and kittens are a fantastic addition to any family. But once you twig the board's time to worry about furniture. You see the love of cat scratch. They really need anything and if you're not careful they can spoil your furniture quickly rewarded. But before you give up hope that there are things you can do to protect your furniture without having your cat's claws.
You need to encourage your cat to scratch a scratching post instead of your furniture. An understanding of why cats scratch will help us here ….
Cats scratch for many reasons. They zero as a way to exercise and tone your muscles. Moreover, nothing like a form of stretching. They have scent glands on their paws so that cats scratch and scent mark their territory. They like to dig their claws into the post (or your furniture!), Not because they want to ruin it, but as a way of clean and sharpen their claws. Oh I almost forgot to scratch and claw because it feels sooooooo good!
So you can see that scratching is a natural behavior of a cat and should be supported and encouraged to keep her fit and healthy cat. If your cat is scratching the furniture that you think the punishment does not work and will dispose your cat. Sometimes a word or a stern clap loud kitty will stop while you're there, but what happens when you go away?
For a cat a happy and harmonious family and furnishings intact with the following tips may be helpful:
The most important thing you can do is buy a pole for scratch before getting the cat. Thus, the post will be an integral part of the environment of the cat when it arrives. Once a cat has established a behavior is very difficult to break.
The ideal would be to buy more than one post and place them in areas that you think the cat will use most often. In a place near a minimum where the cat sleeps. Cats love to stretch when you wake up – what does not.
Buy a stable position, which does not swing and it feels very sturdy. Cats do not like instability and if the post falls on its own unlikely that the cat will ever use that post again. Look for a good solid foundation and powder should feel and do – do not fragile.
Put a post on your main family area. Your cat wants to be part of the family spend time with you. There's nothing more enjoyable than cover a nap on your lap on a winter day. After a difficult time sleeping on your lap or time to stretch. I hope there is another post or there goes the furniture!
At first you will need to encourage the cat to scratch the post. You do not need to show your cat how to scratch – it already knows! Try rubbing some cat nip in the post, or tie toys and string on the post. Play with the cat around the post so he gets used to grab the place. Trailing wool or string up the site and encourage clawing is my favorite method!
Make sure the post is large enough. Your cat should be able to stretch fully on the post, so look for a minimum height 3 meters. Cats like to dig in their front claws and arch your back to stretch the front legs. This is difficult to do if the post is very short. Beware, if the post is very tight, so your cat will discover that the human furniture is an ideal height!
Play with your cat. Keep him happy and entertained, especially around the places and will be less likely to do it on your furniture!
Finally getting a post that is clear and can be destroyed. Cat's love rough surfaces. They will happily pull and tear on your post and enjoy seeing him deteriorate. Nylon backed carpet is an excellent post covering, such as sisal rope. A cat can really start its grip on both materials. If you currently have a cat that is scratching and clawing the furniture, then look for a post made of similar material. If you Can not find the place try to make your own.
