As competitive as the people who play it, the Fighting genre is always the subject of disputes among the gaming public. Which is the fighter of choice usually depends on whether you are a defensive, tactical, or simply button mashing Fighter player, traits that each series excels in accordingly. I have always had a soft spot for Tekken, which in the most general terms is a very ‘Arcady’ fighting simulator, as opposed to the combo heavy Street Fighter, and the weapon focused Soul Calibur. PSP should suffer when it comes to handling a Fighter that most would use a stick for then, but on the contrary, Tekken 6 reaches the lofty heights of earlier entries in the series, making this a PSP port to take notice of.
The fact that the last PSP Tekken title, the critically acclaimed Dark Resurrection was ported to PS3 a few years back is a testament to how well the series coped with the limitations of the PSP. Each punch, no matter which character it came from landed with the weight you expected, which is seen throughout Tekken 6 too. Using the face buttons as each of your limbs, it’s standard fighting fare throughout, which should please anyone who has been with the series since its conception over a decade ago. Those unaccustomed are welcome too though, Tekken being one of the few games where button mashing can work if you have the right character at the right time. It is hard to see whether the developers wanted to bridge the gap between the two play styles or not, but on PSP where Single Player is the main priority, it makes complete sense.
With plenty to choose from on the single player front, you can get past the lack of Online Multiplayer quickly, modes ranging from Story to Survival that have become Tekken staples are all present and correct here. Arcade gives you 12 random battles to fight through, allowing you to switch characters if you lose a match, with each character earning experience points to increase their rank in the overall ‘King of the Iron Fist’ Tournament. Story mode on the other hand, takes you through 5 character specific fights, leading to their eventual triumph in the competition; both modes ending with a fight with the series regular Ogre.
Tekken_6-PSPScreenshot2Both of these modes are made even more impressive thanks to the multitude of characters the Tekken series has amassed. Of course there are the odd repeat move sets-Eddie and Julia being prime examples of two identical, and easy to spam characters-but on the whole the 40 strong cast list here is varied enough to warrant playing through at least story mode with each character. From Ling Xiaoyu to Jin, all of the Tekken characters are available in Tekken 6, move sets being simple to learn for anyone with prior knowledge of the series.

Taking these characters online would have only made the deal sweeter, as would have a few sessions of the Tekken Force style Scenario Campaign seen in the home console versions of Tekken 6. But even without these modes, the game delivers a fantastic Tekken experience for the PSP. The production values are of note here, as once again Namco Bandai have delivered a fantastic looking and sounding game, both sides of the aesthetic shining through, even when performing intricate Combo maneuvers. Characters retain the same visual flair seen in the HD console versions, a testament to how well the developers know and can work with the available PSP tech.
To be frank, Tekken 6 features the most complete and rewarding fighting experience on PSP, and is a must buy for any fan of the genre. It is both a technical and design marvel, retaining everything that made other entries in the series so great. The best example of Tekken on handheld, and perhaps the most impressive game in the franchise since Tekken 3.
