Teacher casting from drama class?

Has this ever happened to you? We got a new drama teacher this year. She cast the fall play almost exclusively out of the people in her drama class. Especially freshmen drama 1. Even about 3/4 of the people on the callback list were in her class. All the students and even the teachers in the arts dept were talking about it and upset. I’m a sophomore, but I know a lot of freshmen who got in who are, to be quite honest, terrible. I’ve been in plays with them before, and they were extras. I actually went and saw it tonight and it was pretty bad. There are a whole bunch of juniors and seniors who are fantastic who didn’t get in, or at least good roles. I personally didn’t even get a callback, which I know was because my monologue wasn’t upbeat, and everybody was pretty shocked. Has this ever happened to you? How’d you feel? Most everybody hates the drama teacher now…

Give her a chance – she’s new. She’s still learning about the students, and cast the students she’s used to working with.

Let her learn the ropes. Don’t let your personal annoyance color your perception of the play.

To be honest, in the professional world, most directors work with people they know.
