The General Future Of The MD-80?

Every aviation nut today knows it, the MD-80 is struggling right now. It is a fantastic frame, but the stupid JT8Ds that power it are digging it’s grave with many carriers. But that is right NOW, what does it’s future hold? I personally think that it has a fairly bright future with other carriers. Many European carriers are turning away from it, but it still has a firm hold in the US market (AA is only phasing out 1/4 of them, and Delta and Allegiant are actually synthesizing a fleet). The MD-80 market is also growing in Latin America and the Middle East. The newer JT8D is fairly economical to run when fuel is cheaper, and many airline analysts believe oil prices will stabilize at 60-80 dollars a barrel. Plus, it is fairly cheap to acquire the jets, only about 4 million to purchase. It will probably serve as a cheap source of aircraft for future start up airlines.

What do you think?

Known as the SLUG because it was so slow, fortunately I never had to fly it.. but I have tripped over them for years. Most of the airlines that still operate them have long paid them off and are getting all the service out of the airframe that they can, and will continue to do so. The B737NG is twice the machine. They will slowly be pulled from service as the individual machines develop problems that are not worth maintaining and they will head out to the desert. Where other aircraft aged and were sold off or their leases expired, you might see them come back with startup airlines, but with the state of the economy I don’t see any start up airlines popping up anytime soon.
