3 Classic Sega Genesis Games
Dust off that old three buttoned controller and pop in a cartridge. The Sega Genesis is back and it has some classic games for it. In fact, there were so many classics for the Genesis that they can’t all be covered here, but I will talk about three of the best sequels to hit the console; Sonic 2, X-Men 2 and Vectorman 2.
Up first is a game that probably came with your system, depending on when you bought it. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is one of gamings most classic adventures. It revolves around Dr. Robotnik sealing up all of the cute, furry inhabitants of the various worlds into other, more menacing robots and containers. You are out to stop him and along the way will travel through Emerald Isles, mechanical warehouses and one of the best levels ever to be included in a video game, the Casino World, where you bounce into slot machines and can even use pinball-like flippers to get more rings and a higher score. It was too bad they didn’t have some sort of actual poker chip set for Sonic to play with as well. Another innovation with this game was the addition of Tails. He is Sonic’s buddy and a second player could plug in a controller and move Tails around the world. In fact, this made the game more competitive, as you could duel with your friend to see who could get the most rings, and the highest score.
Then, there is X-Men 2. This game featured some of the best characters from the Marvel Comics, like Wolverine, Gambit, Cyclops and Beast, as well as some that were not so well known, like Nightcrawler and Psylocke. The story revolved around the X-Men joining with Magneto to rid the world of the Phalanx before humanity is cloned for evil purposes. The gameplay was fast and frantic and the character designs, enemies and backgrounds had that classic X-Men look and feel to them.
Then there is a game that was both a critical and commercial success for the system. Vectorman 2 thrust the player into the body of an “orbot” who has been shot down over Earth. He must then fight through evil bugs and insects to get out alive. The game featured pre-rendered backgrounds for a 2.5D look, much like Donkey Kong Country on the SNES used. This game featured fast action, great weapon upgrades and bosses that were difficult to beat. It was, and remains one of the gems of the system
If you, or someone you know, owns a Sega Genesis system and hasn’t played these games, they are sorely missing out on some of the very best gaming that ever hit the 16 bit world.
