Captain America Voice

I like to hunt an old cartoon particular, to promote a discussion about the public voice?

I saw a picture my son was watching, Captain America or something, typical entertainment advertising to children, where at the end of the cartoon, the great and powerful voice says something like: "Children, do not choose crime (to get your point across) instead: vote, contact your congressman or write a letter to his local newspaper. "I would like to find the design so I could get the exact words.

Yogi Berra once said: “If you come to a fork in the road, take it.” But for lifelong baseball aficionado Emma Span, it hasn’t always been that simple. Now, in this winning collection of essays, Span chronicles her love of the sport, from childhood hobby to full-blown obsession, from big break (becoming The Village Voice’s first staff sports reporter in years) to heartbreak (getting a pink slip within a year). She recounts elbowing her way to get a quote from Yankees captain Derek Jeter and waiting for Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez to put some pants on for an interview. She literally gives her lifeblood to see the Mets and hops a plane to Taiwan, home to perhaps the largest concentration of Yankees fans outside of the five boroughs. But after getting laid off and being forced to leave her press pass behind, Span wonders if her passion for the sport will fade. Highly unlikely. Baseball helped Span forge a lasting bond with her father, connect with total strangers, and endure even the toughest times. With a fresh voice, a devastating wit, and an alarmingly encyclopedic knowledge of the game, Span offers a new perspective on America’s favorite pasttime—as a journalist, a baseball nerd, a daughter, and a fervent stay-until-the-last-out fan.

America’s greatest nature writer and a political thinker of worldwide impact, Henry David Thoreau’s remarkable essays reflect his speculative and probing cast of mind. In his poems, he gave voice to his private sentiments and spiritual aspirations in the plain style of New England speech. Now, The Library of America brings together these indispensable works in one authoritative volume.Spanning his entire career, the 27 essays gathered here vary in style from the ambling rhythm of Natural History of Massachusetts and A Winter Walk to the concentrated moral outrage of Slavery in Massachusetts and A Plea for Captain John Brown . Included are Civil Disobedience , Thoreau’s great exploration of the conflict between individual conscience and state power that continues to influence political thinkers and activists; Walking , a meditation on wildness and civilization; and Life Without Principle , a passionate critique of American materialism and conformity. Also here are literary essays, including pieces on Homer, Chaucer, and Carlyle; the travel essay A Yankee in Canada ; the three speeches in defense of John Brown; and essays such as Autumnal Tints , Wild Fruits , and Huckleberries that explore natural phenomena around Concord.Seven poems are published here for the first time, and others are presented in new, previously unpublished versions based on Thoreau’s manuscripts.
