Marvel Comic Books: The Industry Standard?
It's no secret that the books of Marvel Comics are the best selling comic books the U.S. market. Marvel has the highest percentage of market share as it has for many years, just above main rival, DC Comics. But does this really mean that books Marvel Comics are the standard for the industry? They are the best written and best illustrated? They are diverse and varied enough? Will they really captivate the readers that much, or is mainly due to diehard fans of the characters and creators to buy books just for that reason?
Of course, this is not something that can be easily realized, can be even at all. Things like this are very subjective, and no study in the world could possibly measure the reasons behind all purchasers of Marvel comic books buy books. But you can not look at the market, and look for books produced by Marvel and by other companies and develop their own opinion.
Naturally, however, opinions are quite polarized between fans of the books of band Marvel Comics and DC fans of the comic books, each one despising the other. There are many fans who like books of both companies, mind you, but usually even those fans have their loyalty to one company or another. Then there are those fans who hate comic superheroes choose to complete and do all your indy market purchases. But the margin, this is a small group compared to those who are fans of both great. Even the shares of the two largest indy companies Image Comics and Dark Horse Comics, while competitive, are still far short of the massive stock Marvel and DC applications.
But listening to the complaints of fans, at least on the Internet, and sometimes in local comic shops, there are many unhappy customers with many of the books of both companies. But since the subject is books Marvel comics, the major crossover events of recent years bare mentioning, as they won the same amount of praise and scorn for Marvel fans and non-fans.
Many are sick and tired of the massive crossover storylines that, because of problems of the 90s, feel like they are just veiled maneuvers Marketing to force readers to buy more books than you normally would to get the full story. Others enjoy your universe of superhero comics to be united and the effects of world events materializing through all the Marvel comic books. But most agree, out of these crosses, and of course the main books (The books of Spider-Man, X-Men and Avengers books) is nothing but great right now, nor has it been awhile. There are exceptions, like Runaways and Thunderbolts, but in general rate is lower. Even the most important books like Uncanny X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man, which was not a great pair of years ago by the rules and opinions of many.
So why the Marvel comic books outsell all others and maintain the dominant brand in American comics? We never know for sure, but one can assume that is a combination of all the reasons mentioned above.
Not much different than African-Americans did not feel too long ago, or even that Native Americans felt when their lands were stolen. Wolverine and the X-Men suffered the same kind of intolerance, abuse, and segregation from the get go. But despite his affliction, has helped anyone he could. Some, like Wolverine, he became a bitter time. But in general, lived their lives as best they could, human beings have proved wrong in the process.
Over the years, the X-Men have become more accepted by society for a while, but eventually everything would collapse. A radical religious group to crucify some of their ranks, most of the mutant population suddenly became impotent and normal. This rekindled the hatred for mutants, because most had just come to accept its existence, not like him. With the possibility of "no more mutants" a reality hate closet, came forward again.
Still, the X-Men kept calm, for the most part, and proved better than the people spreading their message of hate with words and weapons.
The X-Men comics are a symbol, and society as a whole. They show how the hatred and ignorance can be overcome, and how being different can be a great attribute, not a flaw that we must expel or sorry about. There is strength and power to be only those who allow fear and hate to run their lives will never understand. Maybe they should open an issue X-Men once in a while. Perhaps seeing his ignorance and stupidity displayed in color, somehow enlighten them. Maybe, just maybe, reading stories of how these beings Unique and wonderful are harassed and persecuted an almost daily basis will make them think twice about their own actions. One could only dream of.
