Captain America Star Logo

Is the star logo on Captain America‘s chest copyrighted?
For that matter, what about the “A” on his forehead? It’s simply a white “A” (albeit with specific font) and nothing else as opposed to Superman’s iconic “S” insignia, which is highly detailed.
Captain America‘s star is just a part of motif of the american flag, which isn’t copyrighted. It’s just a star. It’s not a bat emblem, nor a green lantern logo, etc. etc. Can anyone enlighten me on this?
For those unfamiliar with the Cap, here’s a link to his image:

Any ordinary independent “A” or a star would not be copyrighted.
However when incorporated with a costume it would be since the character appears in a comic book it most assuredly is copyrighted which would include every facet of the costume. Most costumes like those sold around Halloween are licensed to reproduce said costumes by those own/holding the copyrights.
The Superman “S” is definitely unique and must be licensed to be reproduced.
