Eastern Conference Preview

Training camps open across North America last week and I hope abound. The Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers out soon for the Czech Republic and Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators will be heading to Sweden to open their seasons. All teams are candidates in September, but in February after his courage was tested, some are resigned to not making the playoffs. Here is how to classify the Eastern Conference look heading into the season.

The winners of the Division:

1. Montreal Canadiens – The Habs will celebrate its 100 season by winning the division north-east and ending at the top of the Eastern Conference for a second consecutive year. Montrealers sustained by a long reconstruction, but with an air of arrogant superiority, Montreal is near the top of the league again. Montreal will discover your cup 25 and end his longest drought since the back of sophomore goalkeeper Price Carey. The price is a sure bet to fill his cloak with Vezina trophies in his career. Newcomer Alex Tanguay will provide extra scoring punch in the Habs top 6. The only significant loss of power-play point man Mark Streit.

2. Washington Capitals – Capitals will once again come out on top in the competitive Southeast Division even more. The goaltending combination of Huet and Kolzig who finished the season, was replaced by former league MVP Jose Theodore, who recovered with the avalanche after a few years down. Rookie defensemen Karl Alzner is a strong bet to make the team this season as one of 19 years. Look to stand firm in box liner blue to be paired with future Norris Trophy winner Mike Green and Green to get the green light to race Go to offensive more often. Oh, and the capitals have this kid named Ovechkin, which is more effective than the General Electric lighting the lamp.

3. Philadelphia Flyers – The Broad Street Bullies era has been revived in Philadelphia. The leaflets are led by brave captain Mike Richards. The courage of the team to victories and are supported by competent authorities goaltending of Martin Biron. The team is four lines deep with players who can score, hit, and defend. Braydon Coburn is emerging as an excellent way two defenders, similar to Dion Phaneuf. Two years ago, the Flyers were last in the NHL but then goes through smart GM Paul Holmgren made a remarkable turnaround. The most significant loss in the fallow Captain Jason Smith was clearly on the downside of his career. There are plenty of young people to compensate for his departure.

Playoff Teams:

4. Pittsburgh Penguins – was a riot out of season for the Stanley Cup finalists. The team lost several key free agents, including rental Marian Hossa playoff, local boy Ryan Malone, grizzled veteran Gary Roberts, Jarkko Ruutu Pest, enforcer, Georges Laraque and backup goalie Ty Conklin. Fortunately for GM Ray Shero he was able to maintain services to remain stable Brooks Orpik defenses at home to avoid the summer to be a complete loss. Pittsburgh less than adequately replaced those with aging players Miroslav Satan out of a year down with the islanders and Ruslan Fedotenko solid third liner who will take a picture with Crosby. Crosby, Staal, Malkin and lead the feathers in front, while veteran Sergei Gonchar, Ryan Whitney always improve, and blue chip prospect Kris Letang will shore up the blue line.

5. Ottawa Senators – Last year, the Sens get out the door and had the best start to a season in the NHL that the wheels never fell. Troubled goalie Ray Emery came fights in practice when he showed up on time. Injuries hurt the Sens and Coach John Paddock was fired in an attempt to shake the team out of its funk. Ottawa was very dependent of Dany Heatley, Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza goals last season and has not changed much. Young players like Antoine Vermette, Chris Kelly and Mike Fisher will be joined Nick Foligno and forwards to be counted on to score secondary. The biggest change will be of the Ottawa blue line, where the time Senator Wade Redden left via arbitration after two disastrous seasons. Ottawa traded Andrej Meszaros also after his contract demands were too steep for GM Bryan Murray. New to the Sens blue line Filip Kuba is young and promising Alexandre Picard acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay and former Oilers and Flyers captain Jason Smith. Alex Auld replaces Ray Emery to back up Martin Gerber unquestioned (by number, the better or worse) a goalkeeper this year. The expectations are so low as they have been in Ottawa since 1995.

6. Rangers NEW YORK – The Rangers were very active in his list remake this summer, and his movement is still very likely to come. It is believed that sometime before November, Rangers will add former Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin. If / when Sundin eyes closed for Scott Gomez to be treated by a defensemen to shore up the blue line. The Rangers also will host Nikolai Zherdev, Markus Naslund and Dan Fritsche in the front and Wade Redden and Dmitri Kalinin to their blue line. Far from New York are former captain Jaromir Jagr, leader veteran Brendan Shanahan, super pest Sean Avery and Fedor Tyutin. Despite all of the realignment, the blue shirts will go as far as goalie Henrik Lundquist will carry them.

7. Carolina Hurricanes – Injuries have prevented the Hurricanes make the playoffs the past two seasons and hurricanes are already with health issues. Winger Justin Williams was injured in the first team's work and will miss 4-6 months. Most of the squad is intact from last season Joni Pitkänen with being the only newcomer result. Pitkänen was acquired in a trade for Erik Cole. Defensemen Bret Hedican and Glen Wesley retired in the offseason. The Hurricane will again be led by Eric Staal and the goalie Cam Ward. Carolina will need to win their division games have a shot at the playoffs as Tampa Florida and will be breathing down their necks.

8. Boston Bruins – The towners Bean returned to the playoffs last season, playing a strong game of defense under the new coach Claude Julien. The team was without its best player, Patrice Bergeron for most of the season after a hit from behind resulted in a terrible concussion. Michael Ryder is the acquisition only of consequence as long Bruin Glen Murray was bought. Improvement will come back in with Bergeron and young like Milan Lucic, Phil Kessel, Chuck Kobasew and be counted on for major contributions. Goalie Manny Fernandez back from injury challenge Tim Thomas for paper # 1, with both looking for over his shoulder as Tuukka Rask is expected to challenge for a roster spot.

On the outside looking in:

9. New Jersey Devils – Lou Lamoriello has kept the Devils in contention for the last 15 years, despite losing players to free agency and friction. This may finally be the year where the magic disappears Lou. The team lost no players of consequence and repatriated former Devils Brian Rolston and Bobby Holik, but it will hardly keep them with the skills of the Division Atlantic. Having to play the young upstarts of Pennsylvania (Penguins and Flyers) 12 times, as well as six games against the Rangers might be enough to keep the demons of action post season. Also working against the Devils is Martin Brodeur is getting older and does not seem as capable of playing 75 games a season anymore. He looked ordinary against the Rangers and Sean Avery make rattle his cage. If Brodeur shows no sign of failure of the dark shot in a playoff spot will dissipate.

10. Tampa Bay Lightning – No team made more changes than the Lightning this summer. The team has new owners, new GM, new coach, roster and almost completely other than that which opened the 2007-08 season. Program sales should reach an all time high in St. Pete. Only one star player was removed from the roster that finished last overall in 2007-08 and is Dan Boyle. He was traded in a package that landed young defensemen Matt Carle. The team also traded Alex Picard and Filip Kuba Andrej Meszaros to the Lightning giving two building blocks for the blue line to go with young talent up front. Superstar Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis will be joined by first overall pick Steven Stamkos. The Lightning has been active in free agency adding Ryan Malone, Gary Roberts, Mark Recchi, Vaclav Prospal and Radim Vrbata. Despite all these acquisitions, the wealth of Lightning depend on the game goalie Mike Smith. Smith was acquired at the trade deadline in Dallas and has yet to prove he is capable of dealing with a number of functions. He will be supported an aging veteran Olaf Kolzig, acquired through free agency after a long career in Washington.

11. Buffalo Sabres – The good news for Sabres fans is that the team locked up Ryan Miller, who could have been a free agent at the end of next season and almost certainly would have left the Sabres. The bad news is that the team is still recovering from the departure of Chris Drury and Daniel Briere in the summer of 2007 and will again miss the playoffs. The depth of the lower kept the Sabres competitive league system last year and will again this season. Derek Roy and Jason Pominville intensified, but a thin blue line proved too much for the Sabres to overcome. No losses or acquisitions of consequence were made by GM Darcy Regier whose future with the Sabres was only solidified this week when he signed a contract extension. No major changes will result in the same result as last year.

12. Florida Panthers and two big changes this season for the Panthers. The first is that the leader Olli Jokinen was traded to the Coyotes on the draft defensemen Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton. The second is the new coach Peter DeBoer replaces Jacques Martin, who served as coach and GM last season and was informed by the owner to choose a job. Veteran Cory Stillman was also signed and Bryan McCabe was acquired in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs Mike Van Ryn. Any improvement of the Panthers will result in interdivisional play strong and continuous development of their young players: Jay Bouwmeester, Steve Weiss and Nathan Horton. If Florida is far from a playoff spot in February expect Bouwmeester, who is growing tired of losing, to be moved in a trade because he will be eligible for free agency next summer and would be lost for nothing.

The Tavares Sweepstakes:

13. NY Islanders – was an interesting off season for the Islanders. Ted Nolan has lost the power struggle with GM Garth Snow and was abruptly replaced as coach. The bone of contention was the team's direction. Nolan wanted to continue using the veteran players and trying to make the playoffs while Snow decided it was time to a truly complete youth movement. The team was in the game until an injury sidelined the All Star game starting goalie Rick DiPietro and without the team's franchise player aspirations playoff was dashed. Ruslan Fedotenko and Miroslav Satan two veterans who were discharged, while the team signed Mark Streit to play sail away from Montreal and added Doug Weight Anaheim via free agency a couple of moves curious. Blake Comeau, Kyle Okposo, Jeff Tambellini and Sean Bergenheim are young people who will see their increasing role with the team. Good mix of veterans and young players on the blue line will match Dipietro to help keep the Islanders in some games, but lack of firepower will prove to be the Achilles' heel.

14. Toronto Maple Leafs – The leaves had a solid race from 1998 to 2004 fought a playoff spot and making noise. They have not made the playoffs since the lockout, 2008-09 and enter into full rebuilding mode. Gone are long Leafs Mats Sundin, the leading scorer in franchise history, Bryan McCabe and Darcy Tucker. Joining them marching out of the city were chronic underachiever Kyle Wellwood and Andrew Raycroft flash in the pan. Leaves brought veterans Nicklas Hagman and Jeff Finger to ensure the stability of the veteran to pay the extremely high rates. They also coaxed from retirement Curtis Joseph with a job playing with the team. The leaves were naive last season and added Ryan Hollweg and Jamal Mayers on trades to provide some grit and toughness. Leafs fans hope for is years away, but the first steps are being taken As Nikolai Kulemin joins the team from Russia and "Rubber Man" Luke Schenna was drafted fifth overall. The team will be younger, tougher, and solid defensively, but will struggle to score in the first season under Ron Wilson as coach. The team is waiting for Brian Burke of Anaheim arrive to take over as president and GM in 2009. The greatest hope is that movements lead the team to the league cellar and the possibility of a draft local phenom John Tavares.

15. Atlanta Thrashers – New coach John Anderson inherits a team with superstar Ilya Kovlachuk and not much else. Some depth was acquired when Marian Hossa was traded, but the team lacks talent in front and top 6 a very thin blue line. Ron Hainsey and Jason Williams is third tier agents added in the summer, while the aging players Bobby Holik and Alexei Zhitnik were shown the door. Often always inconsistent and injured Kari Lehtonen enter the year as the starting goalie, but will be challenged by Ondrej Pavelec. Bryan Little and this year's third overall pick Zach Bogosian will challenge for papers on this talented squad deficient. It will be a long year for the rookie coach in his first opportunity, much to the NHL level
