David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam

David Berkowitz, the notorious American serial killer called himself "Son of Sam." He confessed to six murders and injuring many others, but police estimate his killings to be much more than six. He was born to Betty Broder and Joseph Klienman, with whom he had an affair while married to Tony Falco. David Berkowitz's original name was Richard David Falco.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1953. Joseph refused to accept the child and so Betty gave him the name of her husband, Falco. As soon as he was born, he was given in adoption to a Jewish couple who changed his name to David Berkowitz.

As a child David never had any interest in studies. But he was a basket good football player and was a bully in your neighborhood. His adoptive father married after his first wife died, but David, who was devastated the death of his mother, never liked his father's second wife. Because of this, his relationship with his father also got tense. David joined the U.S. Army in 1971 and was to Korea. Later, he took to Christianity and claimed to be born again.
His first attack was on two women, of whom only one survived in 1975. His shooting spree began in the summer of 1976. In New York, he shot two women at close range as he sat inside a car in a parking lot. In October 1976, another victim, a 19-year-old was shot in a car park in Queens. A month later, he shot two other women who were walking home after a movie in Queens. Although both survived the attack, one was paralyzed from the waist down.

The year 1977 brought more killings in New York. The modus operandi was the same as the others. Christine and John was sitting in his car in a parking lot. Though John survived, Christine succumbed to gunshot wounds.

That was when the police woke up and found a pattern in crimes. The target was women with long brown hair or couples in a car in the parking lot. Another girl, Virginia, was killed at point-blank on the road in Queens.

The police took all the murders together and "Operation Omega" was launched to find Berkowitz. About 300 police were involved in this operation.
Finally, David was arrested outside his home on August 10, 1977 in New York. It is understood that his first words were for the police "what you took so long? "His thirst for blood and death of her adoptive mother, which he felt was a conspiracy to destroy his master, turned him into a serial killer.

In prison, he pleaded guilty and wanted to avoid the death penalty. He is now a reformed Christian and prefer to stay in prison for his entire life. As he gave himself as 'Son of Sam "is a bit strange and it made the police suspect that he was mentally disturbed. Sam was the name of his neighbor, Sam Carr, who had a black lab David thought it was possessed by an ancient demon. He thought the dog had him killed.

He believed that when he tried to kill the dog he missed the target because of the super natural intervention. His statements clearly proved his mental state and he was sentenced to 365 years in prison in 1978.

David's story life has inspired many filmmakers to make films about it. "I am deeply hurt by your calling me an enemy of women. I'm not. But I'm a monster. I am "Son of Sam." I'm a brat. "These are the opening sentences of his letter to Captain Joseph Borelli, where he calls himself a demon is called upon to "kill". Today, David Berkowitz is a born-again Christian who is described as a model prisoner.
