The Fortress of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia: Step back in time

The Fortress of Louisbourg. The book, said to spend a whole day there. In a straight line Fortress is only twenty miles across the island of Baddeck. The island, however, is split in two, quartered and sliced by Bras d'Or to the sea, an inland sea water salt with many bays that extends from it. An hour later we arrived at the visitor center to the Fort. From there, he boarded a bus for the ride of two miles more to the fortress itself, which sits on a spit of land jutting into the Atlantic Ocean. Be warned to bring warm somthing with you, because the temperature of the Fortress is about ten to fifteen degrees cooler than at the visitor center.

You will be stopped at the door by armed security guards in uniforms of the 18th century requires you provide some rum for them while visiting the fortress. They also explained the rules and regulations about visiting the fortress. The fortress was founded in 1713 by the French to provide protection for the cod fishermen and hunters in the region. Until 1744 the civilian population has grown to more than 2,500 settlers and a permanent garrison numbering 700. At that time he rivaled the Boston and Philadelphia in size. Trade between the cities was too expansive; Louisbourg exported salted cod, while imports of goods for the day-to-day living. The government also tried to lure some of the Acadians to move there to cultivate the land around the area. Some did with great difficulty. The French knew how to build a magnificent fortress, but chose a miserable place to build it. Get lucky and be there in perhaps one of best days of the year. Even with the sun shining, there's a strong breeze. In general, the area is ten to fifteen degrees cooler than inland and is frequently shrouded in fog or too wind. During the winter is pure hell.

What makes the place so remarkable is that there was nothing there before the French built the fort in 1713 and after the English destroyed it in 1760. The only thing left were the foundations of buildings and more than 8,000 pages of documents held by Frenchmen. These projects contained, detailed inventory of houses and gardens of the deceased after inventory. Records were so thorough that when the Canadian government decided to rebuild a fifth Louisbourg's original, they were able to do so with impeccable precision. The interior of buildings, who could not play, they played in exhibition spaces. There are three restaurants: one for the rich, one for commoners, and a pub for sailors. The soldiers in the fort could not eat out.

Reenacters give demonstrations firing of cannon and musket. Over the several buildings people in period costumes explain the contents of the building and the lives of people who lived in them. There were captains the military, businessmen, engineers, ship captains, accountants, and the Sisters of Notre Dame School for Girls. The Bastian, the barracks, is the second largest building Built by the French in North America (the largest is at Artillery Park in Quebec). There, the governor lived in splendor and the soldiers were in garrison Squall. The chapel was used as a church for the community, with four Masses on Sundays.

Try the bread that can be purchased at the bakery. Baked daily, you have the option soldier bread made of rye and wheat bread to white rich person, or a combination of both. Choose the soldier's bread: $ 2.75 for more than two pounds. Nibble on it all day. One of the reenactors was extremely remarkable. He played a soldier for more than twenty-five years. He has the looks and mannerisms of Mel Gibson. Not only is he very experienced, but he loves his work and have a great time talking to people. If you "tweak" the right way, he could have a present for you. It is worth the worth the trip alone.
