Mystic Connecticut and New London: a cut above sea
Stop and visit the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in Olde Mistick Village, a shopping center with unique boutiques off the wall. Ask for advice wonderful. Besides the famous aquarium which has both indoor and outdoor exhibits and hands on exploration of Mystic Seaport that offers teachers and costumed artisans depicting the life of the 19th century in a shipbuilding port, a stroll across the river and explore the houses to the sea. Not only are you given a view of the Mystic Seaport crowded with hundreds of children roaming the ships, buildings and views, you also has the narrow streets of the waterfront for yourself. Drive at a walking pace, admiring the houses of citizens. Each house has a plaque naming the original owner occupation and date of construction. There were carpenters, captains, sail makers, doctors, priests, merchants, tavern keepers, mechanics, etc. This is a treatment real, not just being away from the crowds, but also seeing the royal houses of the 19th century, where these men and their families lived. From the building exteriors, size, architecture and surrounding landscaping, these were prosperous men.
Leaving the seaside calm, visit the rest of the city, passing by Mystic Pizza, where the 1988 movie was filmed. The rest of the city rises to the surrounding mountains, offering a view of the Mystic River and Long Island Sound. At the exit of town on Rte. Stop in Stonington, CT; another surprise. Once again the streets are very narrow with houses of people in the marine business. A house is remarkable Captain Edmund Fanning, who was first to fly in the United States flag around the world in 1798-9, aboard the Betsy.
A little-known event that occurred here is a fierce battle against the British. Holding out the parts of three British ships landed local citizens Stonington Mystic and held off the invasion. A lighthouse on the point still stands since the days of the battle. The cemetery is what you came home to these brave men of Mystic. Stonington men are buried in a historic cemetery in the same way in your city.
Across the Pawcatuck River, the dividing line between the Connecticut and Rhode Island, you venture in Westerly, RI. See bacchanal on Watch Hill Point. This merry-go-round was built in 1870. Each horse is hand carved from a single piece of wood. Their tails and manes of horses are real hair. The horses swing out when the bacchanal turns giving illusing flying. The spree is still in operation.
Next visit to New London. New London is also the childhood home of Eugene O'Neill's Monte Cristo Cottage. Overlooking the harbor, O'Neill, playwright just to win the Nobel Prize, used this setting for two of his plays, Long Day's Journey Into Night and Ah, Wilderness. Signage in Connecticut is wonderful until you reach the cities. The founding fathers assume you know what street you are. They are very good at giving the names of cross streets, but they are negligent in the main streets. You may have a difficult time finding Pequot Street house where O'Neill was. Use a map.
War Office of Trumbull House. At the heart Lebanon, CT, find the home of Jonathan Trumbull, the only colonial governor who sided with the revolutionaries. London is situated midway between Boston and New York. His house was a meeting point for over 1,200 strategy meetings. Perhaps the most important one was with Washington and Rochambeau Comte before the Battle of Yorktown.
