1997-1998 Honda Odyssey (U.S.)
The Odyssey was introduced in 1995 as Honda's first minivan based on the platform of the Accord, with a 4 cylinder engine, all disc anti-lock braking, all wishbone suspension and a four-speed automatic transmission with steering column lever assembly and a characteristic deter-Hill, marketed as Grade Logic. The bill introduced unibody construction, dual airbags, glove boxes, dual zone heating and cooling capacity 20 percent higher than a system Accord (overhead rear fan-speed control adjustment and control main switch on the front seat passenger), conventional rear tipper, instead of opening the doors, and a third row seat that could fold and fall into a compartment below the floor of the spare tire SpaceSaver performed within, right, the rear wall of the cabin.
Honda Odyssey sold the first generation in two trim levels. The LX accommodating seven passengers with two front buckets, a removable middle seat of three seats and one seat to the line two places third parties. The EX accommodated six passengers (using two captain chairs second row removable instead of the bank) and offered additional equipment, including a roof rack, alloy wheels, height adjustment of the driver's seat of power electric sunroof, keyless remote entry, fog lights (later model year), side moldings and body color mirrors, map lights and 20-watt AM / FM / cassette six-speaker of audio system.
In a cooperation agreement between Honda and Isuzu, Isuzu offered a rebadged version of the Odyssey of 19961999 as the Isuzu Oasis. In turn, Honda and Acura offered the Trooper and Rodeo rebadged as the Passport and SLX, respectively.
In 1996, New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) expanded the number of cars licensees, approving the first generation Odyssey for use in the city's taxi fleet to Odyssey was recommended by the grandson of seven years old, committee member advisory TLC. test pilots identified initial advantages over the then prevalent Chevrolet Caprice and Ford Crown Victoria cab models including greater height (for a better view Road), headroom, legroom in back, back footroom (Odyssey front-wheel-drive with a flat floor) and cargo space over the sedans as well as openings air conditioning in the rear, the sedans do not offer.
Reception
In its debut, the Odyssey won the Japan Car of the Year Award (special category) and the RJC New Car of the Year In September 1997, Odyssey sold over 300,000 units, making it the fastest Honda, selling new cars and breaking the record Civic. The Odyssey was Wheels magazine Car of the Year 1995. At the European launch of the Odyssey, which was marketed as Shuttle, former British Grand Prix driver Jonathan Palmer described his treatment in order equal of any "executive saloon".
In a survey of 1995 owner survey, 98% of respondents rated the treatment as Odyssey above average 50.3 percent of engine power rating to be good and 25 percent wanted a more powerful engine. Further analysis of the first generation Odyssey minivan summarized reception from the market:
The Odyssey was lost in the market for minivans, which favors a huge amount, comfortable interior space and versatility
Development
The Odyssey was designed by Kunimichi Odagaki, then chief engineer of Honda Research and Development Center, along with a team of 20 members in the wake of Japan, the recession of the early 1990s and the possibility that rates of 25 percent if the minivans were imported to the U.S. as light trucks. During development of the Odyssey, it became essential to overcome these obstacles and devise a feasible interior package that could use the manufacturing facilities existing with minimal investment.
Odagaki traveled to the U.S. in September 1990 with a small team to conduct an analysis of the U.S. minivan market. In the early projects, the team was considering changes to the project from four-cylinder V6 alternatives, when the project was canceled.
Odagaki continued to work with a "Team" underground, using as a creed design concept of a personal jet "which in turn drove the car from the original concept PJ codename. Odagaki conceived the idea of the third row of seats folds into a compartment floor, and he worked with his team include a central corridor. "The team determined a minimum height of 1.2 meters to keep the interior corridor, and favored a design with a low floor for ease of entry and exit of passengers, easy parking capacity, the height Load low ceiling and greater productivity on the assembly line.
The team worked to convince management of the project viability, using extensive illustrations, a scale model of a quarter and a foam model of actual size. In April 1991, Odagaki won permission to develop a prototype.

After taking the right-hand drive prototype for the U.S., Odagaki won support from American Honda. Production was officially launched on October 20, 1994, the first Honda model to be launched simultaneously across three distribution channels Honda's Japanese (Primo, Clio, Verno), marketing, Odyssey through three channels under the same name.
In its debut, the Odyssey won the Japan Car of the Year Award (Category Special) and New RJC Car of the Year Award. In September 1997, Odyssey sold over 300,000 units, making it the fastest Honda, selling new cars and breaking Civic record.

The second-generation Odyssey North American market was first assembled in Canada to 1999 model mainly in North America and is marketed in Japan as the LaGreat between 1999 and 2004. The TV advertising campaign for the new odyssey evokes moments of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, in particular the docking station and extended space sequencess moon landing to the soundtrack of the Blue Danube waltz.
With its second generation, Odyssey was considerably larger than its predecessor and adopted the format style Chrysler minivan, with sliding rear doors instead of hinges, and a power 210 (160 kW) V6 engine instead of the original, four-cylinder. Odyssey offered two sliding doors as standard equipment, while some minivans time only offered a hand, a second port to be optional. The Odyssey Power sliding doors that were offered standard on EX trims, but optional on the LX trim. Odyssey has kept the fold-in-backseat on the floor, an innovation adopted by many other minivans. The van continued to receive improvements, such as offering two entertainment systems VHS and DVD-based. There was also a provision Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System, launched in 2000, who became the first navigation system offered in a minivan.
For the 2002 model side torso airbags were added and also made standard.
The 2004 model was the only model year the second generation Odyssey to receive ratings Reliability of five out of five according to Automotive Information Systems. [Citation needed]. Consumer Reports gave the Odyssey its highest mark in the IIHS frontal offset, Gov't Front and Side Gov't years 20002008 (no Side Gov't tests for the model 1999, and there is no data available for the 2009 model). [Clarification needed]
A second generation Odyssey was a commercial success. He was praised for its powerful V6, its manipulation of its independent suspension on all four wheels, and features like a large cabin, power sliding doors and stow-away third-row seat. He won consecutive Edmunds.com Most Wanted awards Editors' of 19992003 in the minivan category.
Refresh Mid-generational
The Odyssey also received a significant increase in the power of 210 hp (157 kW) to 240 hp (179 kW) in 2002. Also added in 2002 was a five-speed automatic transmission, side airbags, rear disc brakes, and some minor cosmetic improvements outside and inside. The Odyssey remained unchanged for 2003 and 2004 before being replaced with third-generation model.
Transmission issues
A 4-speed automatic transmission, in 1999-2001 models had serious problems with the durability of the transmission. Honda spokesman Mike Spencer said four-speed models have been hit with a bad bearing that could break apart, scattering metal fragments that clogged passages transmission fluid, causing change irregularly. Honda responded to problems by extending the warranty on the transmission of U.S. '99-'01 models of seven years or 100,000 miles (160.900 km). An agreement Class Action wider coverage of 109,000 miles (175.400 km) or 93 months for some '99-'01 Odysseys Canada USA is not included. Reliability five-speed automatic was first installed on the Odyssey 2002 model, but overall the transmission does not improve by 2004, according to the Consumer Reports. Mike Spencer, an Acura spokesman said the five-speed models typically were damaged by premature wear of the third set of gear clutch. As the material friction clutch worn it around bits within the transmission case, blocking the fluid lines and causing erratic. Drivers may experience slip, poor or no shifts, or sudden changes of gear down-fifth to second gear.
Under certain conditions, to a transmission problem arose from five different speeds, with the second speed can overheat and break, causing the transmission block. An oil jet was added to lubricate this gear, but that does not solve the third gear clutch problem. The addition of Honda transmission cooler with the towing package also allows the transmission fluid temperature that are too high. But it was necessary, together with a power steering cooler to any trailer, or the guarantee is void. The Acura CL, TL, MDX and Honda Accord suffered similar problems.

Honda introduced the third generation Odyssey for the 2005 model year. She grew up in width and weight, but kept the length of the previous generation and interior space.
Honda introduced the engineering corps to ACE Odyssey of the third generation, which was later used in the eighth generation Civic. side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control are included all models of both features were previously unavailable.
A number of other features were added, such as umbrellas integrated in the rear doors, windows that roll in the second row and third row "Magic Seat" was changed from a project for a 60/40 straight bench design to allow easy folding. Head restraints can now be left in place when tumbling in the backseat. Some notable features of the redesign were boxes of gloves and a double-floor storage compartment Lazy Susan, located where the spare tire was in the previous generation. The rear windows have changed. It has a panel-mounted shifter instead of a column mounted shifter in previous generations. The second row bucket seats do not fold into the floor. a place of "leap-Plus One 'was optional on the EX trim and more expensive for use with an eighth passenger.
Horsepower was increased to 255 (re-rated to 244 by the new SAE guidelines used in the model 2006 + descriptions) and EX-L and Touring models receive Honda VCM, or Variable Cylinder Management system. This allowed a van to get U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg-US (12 L/100 km, 24 mpg imp) / 28 mpg-US (8.4 L/100 km, 34 mpg imp) for the 2005 model year. (18 mpg-US (13 l/100 km 22 mpg imp) / 26 mpg-US (9.0 L/100 km, 31 mpg imp) for non VCM equipped LX and EX models). These numbers were re-evaluated in 2007, bringing the numbers 17/24 to 16/23 and VCM equipped models for non VCM equipped models. Consumer Reports noted in the 2005 self Odyssey was one of the vehicles gas mileage record that was far below EPA ratings. Acceleration was slightly slower than the generation of two models.
The EX-L and top finishes can be purchased with both navigation and rear entertainment, while the VHS-based i-VES system was discarded. There are four trim levels in the U.S.: LX, EX, EX-L and Touring, the package top-of-the-line Odyssey of programming that incorporates features such as run-flat tires and power tailgate.
Only the Touring model is equipped Pax run-flat tires that are designed to run 125 miles (201 km) without air pressure. Pax was not sold on the Brazilian market because the availability of vans tires and services can not be assured. Pax consists of a single tire with rim diameters of different inside compared to outside, a support ring is a ring disk that is mounted on the wheel Pax owner only, a lubricant and the wheel itself. When the apartment, Pax runs on internal support ring greased by gel special. He also included even before the TPMS tire pressure measurement systems were required by the government. Odyssey Pax wear flats run faster than other original tires thinner design with grooves on the edges and walking more difficult due to the lower profile that reduces the distance between the outside of the tire with the support ring when flat. Pax tires cost about $ 1200 for a set of four or $ 1600 for 4 snow tires, including mounting and packaging rate of gel. Pax requires special equipment and training to assemble and make the alignment of the wheels that many shops do not have. One packet of gel property is required for assembly or overheating while running flat will occur. Some dealers and tire shops very few are able to assemble or repair Pax. This causes high prices and reduced availability. Replacement or repair, especially on weekends and holidays is limited. The tires only for Odyssey Touring Pax are Michelin Energy LX4 or snow tires Michelin X-Ice. None Odyssey Touring other options exist for tire 20052007 despite being in the market since late 2004. Pax became an option for 2008 models.
Third generation Odyssey has fewer transmission problems for the second generation and reliability 20052008 overall average was better than average according to Consumer Reports. Problem areas include the body integrity, body hardware, audio system, brakes and suspension according to Consumer Reports, April 2007. Owners reported tremor VCM operation, engine mount and / or problems with torque converter. Crash test rating was five stars in every test, but in 2005 There was a security concern. "During the side impact test, the driver's door opened and unlocked. A door opening during a side impact collision increases the likelihood of occupant ejection. "Odyssey has earned a place in Car and Driver's 5Best trucks for the past three years, as well as a series other prizes. The Odyssey minivan is the best ranked in U.S. News Graphics.

For 2008, Odyssey received a mid-facelift model. All models are equipped with active front head restraints, daytime running lights, and a standard MP3 connector. The grille is similar to the 2008 Agreement and the rear lights have been renovated.
The backup camera, previously included only models equipped with navigation, rearview mirror is integrated into the system Navigation Non-EX-L. There's also full Bluetooth support of the Touring model for all Bluetooth-equipped devices. Touring models are now standard navigation and the Plus-One jumpseat the EX and EX-L.
In Canada, a new entry-level DX trim was added to complete the LX, EX, EX-L, and packages tourism for 2008 and 2009 model years. The DVD rear entertainment system can be ordered in the EX-L and trim is standard on the Touring. The DX lacks features such as "Line-2 Plus One Seat with storage, conversation mirror with sunglasses holder, tinted glass, roof rails, and frames of black body.
JD Powers last evaluation reported an increase in quality issues reported by owners. The most frequent concerns are the vibration of the vehicle, direction of vibration and irregular operation of transmission.

In late 1999, a new and improved "second generation of the Odyssey appeared in Japan and Australia as Left Hand Drive (LHD) in China. However, this new Odyssey was a major upgrade of the first generation Odyssey, rather than a model completely new. As a result, its shape and general appearance were similar to first-generation Odyssey. Still, was 85 mm (3.3 in) and 10 mm (0.4 in) higher than the previous model, while the length of the hall has been reduced. The basic model continues to be sold with a 2.3 L 4 cylinder F23A (RA6 (2WD) and RA7 (4WD), but a 3.0 L V6 VTEC J30A (first generation, now producing 210 hp (154 kW)) was available with RA8 (2WD) and RA9 (4WD). The Odyssey 2000 was the first Honda receiving a 5-speed automatic transmission (3.0L engine). All reducers second generation also featured another first – a kind of manual mode tiptronic, known as "Honda S-matic, in which a gearbox remains a whirlpool automatic Honda Classic, but the driver is able to manage changing the time (if authorized electronically) with the selector '+' & '-' position. The interior was completely new. The exchange Former auto column was transferred to the center console. Digital climate controls replaced the old manual controls, and were located near the controls of the audio system. Woodgrain Garrison was normal in all models, while V6-L models in leather was standard. The configuration of the interior was also changed (second and third row), and the spare wheel was moved to a new position below the third line. With L and versions Absolute, an additional heater in the third row was added. The sunroof was no longer available.
A sporty "version Absolute" with all the chassis for the first time they appeared. This co-Mugen tuned version differs suspension changed the behavior of European car, as is 17-inch wheels and some exterior / interior changes.
In January 2003, Odyssey was given a mild restyle. He received new badges largest Honda to the front and back, clear lens tail-lights (for amber) and a larger front grille, with four tracks chrome, instead of three. Price was reduced by U.S. $ 2,000 (U.S. $ 24,490) for the 4 cylinders, and U.S. $ 4,000 for the V6 (U.S. $ 30.490). In the Australian market, the New Odyssey has proved more popular than its predecessor, at least initially. However, in 2002, sales reached a low of all time, and in 2003, sales of only 649 units were almost a third of the total in 2000.

The third generation Odyssey Japanese built the first complete redesign of the Odyssey since its introduction in 1995. Go on sale in Japan in late 2003 and in Australia and many other countries in 2004, continued with a body style 5-door, with much sleeker, lower, and more car-like appearance. To control time cruise first appeared in JDM Odyssey. The 4WD version received the new system DPS. The seat folding mechanism was changed again. The height of the new Odyssey was lower than ever – designed with multi-level parking in mind, especially to Japan The new Odyssey came with the Honda motor i-VTEC K24A, a 2.4 L unit producing 160 hp (118 kW), which is the same engine used in the CR-V and Accord. The 4WD version (RB2) only came with an automatic transmission, while the 2WD version only came with a continuously variable transmission. The V6 engine was dropped completely. Instead, a 200 hp (147 kW) variant of the engine forced K24A was approved for release Absolute Sports (190 hp (147 kW) with 4WD), which was not equipped with an automatic transmission – both 2WD and 4WD variants. Moreover, this new engine has the fuel consumption even if the engine 2.2 age. All this resulted in the new Odyssey become a bestseller. In Australia, the Odyssey achieved its best sales year ever in 2005 and surpassed the taring Toyota first.
