The Incredible Hulk: Still Amazing!

I remember when I was a kid back in the late '70s is really excited about the news that I just heard, The Incredible Hulk one of my favorite comic books from Marvel Comics was coming to network television! It would be a weekly series starting with the debut Series two hours that night Friday! Boy, was I so excited being a huge comicbook fan and especially a fan of the Hulk series I could not wait!

At that time my friends and I read a lot of comic books (well, I read, they just looked at the photos) and so this was a treat yourself. Previously, in the mid 70, Spider-Man tried to run as a weekly series, but can not. He ran for maybe a season later he was gone. We thought it would be pretty much the same way for the Hulk, but we are happy that they were even trying to bring one of our favorite characters to life. Eitherway the night it debuted to everyone I knew who was at home in front TV watching! When we got to school the next day we raved about what we saw and how David Banner became the Hulk! It was exciting for us and we talked about it during weeks!

Now the original series Bill Bixby as David Banner favorites that I always knew as a comic actor of his kind My Friendly Martian days, which was still in syndication during that time. I also saw him in a pair of Elvis' movies and he always seemed to portray someone that you could not really take seriously. So this role was a change for him and Lou Ferrigno World Body Building Champ I believe this was his first television series since that time he was still competing in your sport. Colvin as Jack McGee Mister reporter was a new character for him was a character in the comic series created by Stan Lee, Marvel Comics, and early I did not like. I wanted to see Betty Ross, Rick Jones, Doc Sampson and since that time I was an advocate for the details. But actually the people who produced TV programs have not read comicbooks and thought they could just do whatever they wanted with a character. Well, I think most of them were right for the show ran from 1977-1983 which was a very good race, although at that time I had stopped watching.

Fastforward to when the Retro Television Network (RTN) was run re-runs of the series, and I think I enjoy that show more now than when I did as a kid. When I was a kid the only thing I wanted to see it back to David Banner and the Hulk rip some something or hurt someone. I did not pay attention to the quality of the actual work that went into making the show a success. I mean good story lines, good scripts, excellent acting and script, not on the top campiness as destroying the Batman, and Spiderman and Captain America (movie and series for him). They followed more in line with what Wonder Woman did a semi-hit (I believe he ran for four seasons) and the experience of spending time and Bill Bixby Jack Colvin, who were veterans of stage and screen lended well to make an incredible story, seems more real. No, I do not watch the shows and then that probably would not be now if there were not many really bad on television today! It seems everyone has gone the route Jerry Springer in production values cheap, sleazy topics show, and with low overhead inexperienced or easily and cheaply staff-members to maximize profits and contribute more to the spiral of American intellectual progress. I mean, there many shows are "reality" (which are scripts) that populate the landscape of television and many series of scrolling (as the number of series Law & Order and CSI are there too? I lost count!) and others are just plumb stupid! How the hell is 'Lost' be? "Smallville" started as a good idea, so now he's grown taller and I simply stupid fly through this channel every time it is. At least let me clarify that is what is happening with the television network. The only ones who still try to create high quality presentations are the cable networks and I can cite only a few; Disney Nickelodean, the Sci-Fi channel, ABCFamily (as they are not doing this to "free" stations), Spike and TNT. I must admit that in most of the time I'm watching the Food Network, or RTN, because I'm so disgusted with the lack of quality I see in the current shows that I just do not see them.

Eitherway, it's been a long time since I had seen the Hulk so I blew it off long ago as a simple show of a kid and I wanted to move to more adult fare at this time. Now that I'm seeing how I was wrong for it is a show about a comicbook character, the scripts were very adult and as real as they could have been considering the theme of the show. It was a very well directed and produced due to the talent and the late Bill Bixby Jack Colvin, who can look down with pride in the work they did. Lou Ferrigno is the only original cast member still living and should also be proud that he took the Hulk to play with such ease that up to half expect that there is a Hulk running through streets somewhere trying to get there in time to save the day. As time passes I hope even more people will rediscover the Incredible Hulk and be impressed with a show that was well executed. I believe the series will stand the test of time and one day be included on the short list of classic and beloved TV series that never goes away. One thing I still want to know that in the book he was known as Bruce Banner, why change the name to David?
